Posted

Jean A. Butler, (87) died on September 2, 2023 surrounded by family.

She was the wife of the late John P. Butler (dec. 1989)

Born in Worcester, MA, the daughter of the late Dennis J. and Marion L (Smith) Dowd, she was a Rumford resident since 1970.

A Registered Nurse, Jean worked at the former Wayland Health Center and Rosewood Nursing Homes for over 25 years, serving as Director of Nursing for much of that time.

Jean spent her retirement time serving the needy. She was a 25+ year volunteer at the weekly St Patrick’s Soup Kitchen, as well recycling clothes for donation centers across the state.

She was an avid reader (2-3 books in a day!) and enjoyed travelling. She enjoyed visiting Cape Cod for most of her life. Jean loved to be among her family and friends at any opportunity. She was a resolute fixture for family and friends with her words of encouragement, advice and unwavering support in whatever life held for them.

She was a graduate of Boston College School of Nursing. She was also an avid New England Patriots fan.

Jean leaves two sons: Dan (and wife Pattie) Butler of Lincoln, RI and Paul Butler of Mansfield, MA, as well as 2 grandchildren: Cam (and wife, Cami), and Cal Butler. Her two brothers, Dick (wife Shirley) and Bern (wife Marilyn) are all pre-deceased.

The funeral and calling hours will be held on Saturday September 23rd at St Margaret’s Church, 1098 Pawtucket Ave., Rumford, RI 02916. Calling hours in the church will begin at 9 am with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 am. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Patrick’s Soup Kitchen, 244 Smith St, Providence, RI www.maryhouseri.org  or Hope Health’s Hospice Unit www.hopehealthco.org  – these organizations were instrumental in our mom’s life, past and present.
