Posted

Evelyn (Costa) Cabral, of East Providence, RI, passed away unexpectedly on Friday May 28, 2021 at the age of 87. The former spouse of the late Joseph Cabral Jr., Evelyn is survived by her children: Professor David M. Cabral of East Providence, Doreen M. Cabral-Deschenes and her husband Raymond Deschenes of Florida, and Stephen Cabral and his husband Brendan Byrnes of New York City. She was also an attentive "Grandma" to the dogs Rocky, Hugo and the late Sophie Cabral.

Born on July 18, 1933 in the Fox Point section of Providence, Evelyn was the youngest child of Antone M. Costa and Helen (Rezendes) Costa, both originally from Povoação, São Miguel in the Azores. She was raised alongside her older brothers, the late Joseph M. Costa and the late Ernest Costa, in an apartment on Ann Street and George M. Cohan Boulevard.

After marrying and raising a family on Wickenden Street, Evelyn first worked for the City of Providence as a crossing guard at Fox Point Elementary School and then worked for numerous jewelry companies in and around Providence. Before her retirement in 2004, she worked as a specialty jewelry assembler at B. A. Ballou & Company for almost 20 years. Evelyn was known for her good taste in jewelry, which was evident in the lovely pieces she wore every day.

Evelyn was extremely proud of her interesting and tight-knit family, and the time spent with her children is what she truly treasured most. She will always be remembered as an avid reader, a lover of animals, a knitter and crocheter, a hot wiener aficionado, a master puzzle maker, a daily newspaper enthusiast, a connoisseur of really good pastry, a devoted Patriots fan, and a dedicated theatregoer. Evelyn shall be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A visitation will be held at 9 am on Friday June 4, 2021 at Our Lady of The Rosary Church, 21 Traverse St, Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial immediately following at 10 am. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence. The Mass will also be livestreamed on the Our Lady of The Rosary Church Facebook page.
