Fatima Avila to Lead Martin Middle School as New Principal. Mercer about to leave.

Posted

Fatima Avila, who resigned as Kent Heights principal at the close of the 2014-15 school year was appointed by the East Providence School Committee tonight as new Martin Middle School Principal.

Avila will take over from Dr. Sandra Forand who returned to the district as Martin's principal after a few years at the Rhode Island Department of Education. Forand, a former Riverside Middle School Principal, is now an Assistant Superintendent of Schools.

Fatima Avila took a leave of absence to return to the classroom at Kent Heights school. Reports had Avila leaving her administrative post at Kent Heights although wanting to return to administrative work someday. She did so after a brief time teaching 5th grade and after most of the district's top administrators, including the Superintendent of Schools announced they would be resigning or retiring.

The vote to hire the popular Avila as Martin's principal was unanimous tonight.

The school committee is interviewing the two finalist candidates for Superintendent of Schools tonight.
