You’re Invited to Honor EP Hall of Famer Edward Serowik

Posted

Ed has been the main reason that the nationally famous Crescent Park Loof Carousel has remained in service and is so popular in East Providence and Rhode Island. Of the over 50 carousels that Charles Looff built in his lifetime, the Crescent Park version remains one of the few remaining in operation in the world and has been named as a National Historic Landmark in 1987. The main reason the Loof carousel hasn't been shut down is Ed Serowik. Whenever the more than 120 year old famous Merry-Go-Round appears to be breaking down, a call goes out to Ed Serowik.

Ed began working at Crescent Park in 1948 as a teenager and is one of the few locals actually hired by the daughter of Charles Loof. Ed was a member of the second graduating class of the "new" East Providence High School. Former Superintendent of Schools Edward Martin recognized Ed's skills and recruited him to work for the school department's maintenance team in 1972. In 1973, Ed was assigned as the Head of Maintenance for the entire high school. With Ed at the helm, the high school was in terrific condition throughout his tenure. In retirement Ed continues to volunteer his time wherever needed. He volunteers to assist in countless school and city events. Ed has been active with the Historic Properties Commission, EP Historical Society, the RI Interscholastic League, and much more in the City. The EPHS 1998 yearbook was dedicated to Ed. He is widely recognized in amusement park publications and has been caretaker of the Looff Carousel for 68 years.

Ed has also created an extensive pictorial and written exhibition of Crescent Park which has been on display throughout Rhode Island. His skills and expertise have been second to none. His skills and expertise have been second to none.
