Motorists have noticed some changes at the intersection of Bay State Road – Route 118 - and Moulton Street. The small island which was the site of a historic cannon has been removed. The intersection is being redesigned due to concerns about public safety. Selectman Dave Perry explained the change needed to be made due to the high amount of pedestrians and vehicles passing through the intersection. “It’s a disaster waiting to happen,” Perry said last month.
Selectman Michael Costello, who also serves as Highway Superintendent, said the cannon would be relocated to property owned by the American Legion. Costello noted the plans for the reconfiguration have already been drafted.
For now, traffic cones and detour signs have been placed in the roadway so drivers can adjust to the new pattern.
