The Emperor of the Diamond: the Story of Napoleon Lajoie, Baseball's First Superstar

Baseball enthusiast Greg Rubano shares the tales of baseball's early days and the exploits of Woonsocket-born and raised Napoleon Lajoie as he captured the imagination of a nation in love with baseball. Lajoie was inducted into the Hall of Fame on June 12, 1939 along with Babe Ruth, Cy Young, and others.

Meeting of the Minds Discussion Group
Wednesdays, May 3, 17, 31, 2017 10am -12pm
Meeting of the Minds, a daytime discussion series led by Ron Massa, is a two-hour forum for the exchange of ideas both contemporary and timeless. The first hour focuses on a topic of political, social, and/or cultural interest drawn from the news of the day; the second on matters of philosophical interest. Join a lively, thoughtful, and enjoyable conversation!

Sleeping Mat Project: Volunteers Needed
Saturday, May 6, 2017 11am – 12pm
All ages can learn how to make sleeping mats out of plastic grocery store shopping bags. Riverside resident Lucy Pereira demonstrates how to make a plastic yarn called Plarn from the bags. Those who crochet or wish to learn to crochet with Plarn will make sleeping mats for those forced to sleep outside. Volunteer to do as little or as much as you can.

ALLISON in Concert

Weaver Library is thrilled to present ALLISON, a superb professional duo, in a free concert. ALLISON is the creation of mezzo-soprano Allison Messier and harpsichordist Paul Cienniwa. Both classically trained musicians, ALLISON is their vehicle for exploring popular songs, from Joni Mitchell and Cat Stevens to Björk and Elizabethan composers.

Master Bird Carver Ray Tameo: Talk and Bird Carving Display

Wildlife artist and bird carver Ray Tameo has spent a lifetime observing, drawing, and carving birds. Tameo, who can spend over 150 hours on one carving, also paints and has donated one of his bird prints for a raffle to be held at the end of the program. The event and the raffle are free and open to all.

Meet the Doulas Night

Doulas of Rhode Island welcome you to learn more about birth and postpartum doula support during labor and after your baby is born. This informational session includes a video, ample time for questions, and is open to all expecting families. Beekeeping Today

Rumford resident Dr. Jane Dennison is a pediatric and adolescent physician and beekeeper. She offers a brief history of bee husbandry, and discusses current issues in beekeeping, including a grant-funded project to re-queen 600 hives in RI. Learn what it takes to be a successful beekeeper at a time when there is much concern about the survival of honeybees.
