Turtles, Mushrooms, Hawks and Walks September 2017 Highlights from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island

(July 30, 2017) – Get out and enjoy the natural world while the warm weather holds. Learn how to identify wild mushrooms on the trails. Get up close with eagles, hawks and owls at Raptor Weekend. Head out on birding walk. Go on, get out there and enjoy the great outdoors!

Franklin is the resident eastern box turtle at the Environmental Education Center. Come celebrate his birthday — the day he hatched! Meet Franklin and learn all about these awesome turtles.

Raptor Weekend
September 9 & 10, 2017; 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Audubon Environmental Education Center, Bristol, RI
Eagles, Owls, Hawks, and Falcons, formidable and magnificent predators of the sky, are headed to Bristol, Rhode Island. Razor-sharp talons, extraordinary strength, hooked beaks and highly developed eyesight and hearing make raptors the rulers of the avian world.

This September they will be descending on the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Environmental Education Center in Bristol, Rhode Island for Raptor Weekend 2017. Wildlife rehabilitators and experts from across the Northeast will bring a wide variety of these extraordinary birds to the largest raptor celebration in New England. Enjoy live flight demonstrations, educational programs and activities for bird enthusiasts of all ages.

Audubon presents a unique opportunity for visitors to get up-close with many species and learn about amazing birds of prey in this fun, family-friendly weekend event.
General Admission:
Adult: $16
Child (ages 4 - 12): $11
Children under age 3 are free
Discounts are available for Audubon Society of Rhode Island Members.


Providence Raptors: Photography by Peter Green

Peter Green is a photographer and graphic designer living and working in downtown Providence. He walks the city, documenting the lives of urban raptors, such as the Peregrine Falcons and Red-tailed Hawks who nest on rooftops and hunt for food in the streets and parks of Providence. These regal, powerful raptors seem out-of-place yet perfectly at home among the landscape of bricks and concrete. For a preview of Peter's photography visit providenceraptors.com. Bird Banding on Prudence
Prudence Island, RI
September 9, 2017; 7:30 am – 3:00 pm
Join a bird banding demonstration and get a close-up look at our feathered friends! Experts will be on hand to share how and why we band birds, as well as what is learned through the process. Early morning will be spent at the banding workshop, followed by lunch at the Reserve. Then take a tour of the island and go for a short walk in the afternoon before departing on the ferry.

Taking the Mystery out of Mushrooming
Audubon Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge, Smithfield, RI

Join Audubon for a wild mushroom extravaganza and learn how to identify the various mushrooms that grow in our area, including edible ones! Begin with an introductory lecture with wild mushrooms on display that were collected from other areas (depending on availability). Next, venture out with an Audubon guide for a hike to find mushrooms growing in the wild then sample some tasty dishes that are prepared using a variety of cultivated "wild" mushrooms. Please note that collecting mushrooms on Audubon property is prohibited.

Explore Prudence Island

Come explore the incredibly rich diversity of wildlife, ecosystems and history on Prudence Island. This is a great way to experience Prudence for the first time. We will make several stops and take a few short walks at a leisurely pace. This is one of the most beautiful times of year to visit Prudence Island – so take a ferry ride and join our exploration!

Equinox Hike

Explore the autumn beauty of the Caratunk Wildlife Refuge. Stroll through the fall wildflowers and the colorful foliage and see what critters might be out and about. Wear sturdy closed toe shoes and dress for the weather.

E-Waste and Recycling: Don’t Dump, Donate!

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island partners with Goodwill Industries to host a two-week recycling event. Old electronics, textiles, clothes, shoes and select household goods are welcome! Museum Day Live!

Sharing the Seas: Safe Boating for Sailors and Whales

Did you know that collisions with vessels is one of the leading causes of death among whales? Collisions can also cause thousands of dollars in damage to boats and injuries to crews. The US Sailing Association, Audubon Society of Rhode Island, New Bedford Whaling Museum and Whale and Dolphin Conversation have joined forces to educate sailors on how to take action and make choices that lead to better ocean conservation. This one-hour lecture provides tips and information on endangered species in our area as well as boater safety. Calling all sailors and recreational boaters - come make the oceans a safer place for both humans and whales!

Art and Nature as One
Prudence Island, RI

Join a unique workshop that incorporates painting, encaustics and clay. Using nature as your inspiration, learn interesting facts about beautiful Narragansett Bay and bring home your own creation to enjoy for a lifetime. The workshop will be taught by island artist Robyn Q. Franczyk. All materials will be supplied. Registration is required.
