Tri-County RVTHS Students to Compete in CyberPatriot Regionals

Posted

Franklin, Mass. – Six students in the Computer Information Systems Program at Tri-County RVTHS are moving on to the regional round of competition in the seventh season of CyberPatriot – the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition.

Two teams of six represented Tri-County in this year’s competition. Cameron Killian, Robert Malcolmson, and Thomas Bourget, of North Attleborough, and Kyle Bazegian, Conor McCaffrey, and Nicholas Wotton, of Franklin, came in third place in the Gold Tier of the state round. They will be advancing to the regionals.

The second Tri-County team came in fourth place in the Gold Tier of the state round. Team members are Devang Bhatt, of North Attleborough, Tyler Bingham, of Walpole, Cory Krasner, of Norfolk, Jason Pisani and Sam Rivelis, both of Franklin, and George Wood, of Medway.

Established by the Air Force Association, the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Education Program was created to excite, educate, and motivate students toward careers in cyber security and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future.

Teams from the United States, Canada, and from Department of Defense Dependents schools abroad are eligible to participate in CyberPatriot’s core program, the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. Teams of two to six students must find and resolve cyber security vulnerabilities in a simulation. The field of competitors is divided into three divisions: the Open Division for public, private and home school teams, the All Service Division for JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, and Naval Sea Cadet Corps teams, and the Middle School Division. Results from two preliminary rounds are used to categorize high school teams into Platinum, Gold, or Silver Tiers, with the Platinum Tier being dedicated to those teams with the highest scores.

A total of 2,175 teams registered for this year’s competition. To advance to the regional round, teams must be in the top three at the state level. Wild cards are given out to teams with the top 12 highest scores nationwide who did not place in the top three for their state. Regionals will be held January 16 through 18. Following regionals, 12 teams with the top scores nationwide in the Platinum Regional Round advance to the National Finals Competition.
