Teach For America Rhode Island Appoints New Board Member

Teach For America Rhode Island today announced the appointment of Dan Lima, financial advisor and a financial planning specialist at Morgan Stanley. At Morgan Stanley, Lima is responsible for building a wealth management practice and supporting his clients with comprehensive financial planning and solutions, and he also served as a 2014 Teach For America Rhode Island corps member in Providence where he taught Algebra I. Board members support the vision and strategy of Teach For America Rhode Island, ensuring local students have access to an excellent education.

A member of Rhode Island’s education community since 2010, Teach For America Rhode Island recruits recent college graduates and professionals to make a lifelong commitment to educational equity, starting by serving as a teacher in a high-needs classroom for two years. As leaders in the classroom, Teach For America corps members make an immediate impact on the lives of their students. The organization seeks to accelerate community progress in education through its collective impact of corps members, alumni who lead across a variety of sectors and district partners.

“Our work takes a community of advocates, supporters and leaders like Dan who are committed to permanently closing the opportunity gap that persists across underserved communities,” said Kristine Frech, executive director of Teach For America Rhode Island. “It’s an honor to welcome him to the board.”

Newly Named Advisory Board Member
Dan Lima- A first-generation citizen and college-graduate, Lima has continually been a supporter of Teach For America and its commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusiveness. Although he is no longer in the classroom, the vision of One Day continues to inspire and influence him. A proud Teach For America Rhode Island alum, Lima continually strives to support current and future corps members through active engagement with Teach For America Rhode Island leadership and staff.

Lima earned his B.A. from Williams College where he double-majored in Economics and Psychology. During his time at Williams, he served as a class representative and captained a varsity soccer team that reached two NCAA Final Fours. Lima also holds a M.Ed. with a focus on Secondary Education from Rhode Island College and currently lives in East Providence, RI with his wife, Julianne.

This fall, Teach For America Rhode Island welcomed 48 new teachers to 18 local schools as part of its annual incoming corps. Together with the alumni community, Teach For America Rhode Island makes up nearly 150 educators in the Ocean State.
