“Sips and Wit” The Cocktail Hour

Gurney’s play The Cocktail Hour, produced by Theatre One Productions, coming to the Alley Theatre 133 Center St Middleboro, Nov 10 for 2 weekends, displays witty observations, making a nearly extinct patrician class, that regards psychiatry as an affront to good manners, underpaid hired help as a birthright and the selling of blue-chip stocks as a first step to Marxism. John, played by Paul Hayden of Taunton, brings his newest play home for his families okay, to produced. Ann his mother, played by Linda Merritt of Middleboro accuses her son’s critics of panning his plays because they resent his WASP’s characters. “They think we’re all Republicans, superficial and all alcoholics,” as she sips her Martini. John’s sister Nina, played by Elizabeth Goulart of Fall River, asks, “Am I in it?” when John says yes, she skims the play and discovers she is a minor character, a minor role in the family play. “Thanks a lot John, a minor role?” John’s father Bradley, played by Bob Duquette of Somerset ask, “What’s it called, this play”? John replies, “The Cocktail Hour.” Bradley, “That title has already been used.” John, “That’s The Cocktail PARTY, T.S. Elliot. Bradley, “We walked out on that one!!” Showtimes Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm, Sunday’s at 2pm. Mature Audiences.
