Selectmen Split on Quorum Number for Town Meeting

Posted

The Seekonk Board of Selectmen voted 3-2 Wednesday to set 75 as the number of voters required to constitute a quorum at Monday’s annual town meeting.

Nelson Almeida, David Viera, and Chris Zorra voted yes while Chairman David Andrade and Justin Sullivan were opposed.

Sullivan had made a motion for the quorum to be at 38 but no one seconded, according to Andrade.

“Though I did want to do a reduction, 38 was too low in my opinion,” Andrade said. “I was looking to be somewhere around like 60.”

Andrade noted 100 residents had pre-registered for the meeting as of Wednesday.

Residents who do attend the meeting will be required to follow social distancing protocols to stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Instead of delivering the microphones by hand to each row, anyone who wants to speak will have to get up and walk over to a microphone stand.

Sanitary wipes and hand sanitizer would be available at various locations.

The meeting will begin at 7 pm in the auditorium at Seekonk High School, 261 Arcade Avenue.
