Seekonk Selectman Stays Home Because of Coronavirus

The Seekonk Board of Selectmen debated how often they should be meeting during widespread fear of the Coronavirus. The board met on Wednesday at Town Hall. However, all municipal buildings have been closed to the public.

Selectman David Viera was absent and relayed a message through chairman David Andrade about the board not meeting unless matters of extreme urgency were being discussed. “Let’s face it, we’re just a pile of germs here at this table,” Andrade said.”And in an effort to not spread (COVID19),we should be limiting the number of meetings as much as possible.”

Andrade noted Viera was over 60 years of age and had underlying health issues, which make him susceptible of dying from the virus. “To be out really wouldn’t be in his best interest,” Andrade added.

A planned discussion on the 2021 school budget was shelved as a result of the epidemic and other town boards have curtailed their meetings.

Selectman Justin Sullivan felt it was crucial for the board to continue their bi-weekly meetings, despite any potential health risks. “Our meetings are truncated, but business has to go on. We still have to continue to get things done in town,” Sullivan said. “When this passes, there are still going to be an abundance of things to address.”

“We have to continue town business,” said selectman Chris Zorra. “If we’re healthy come to the meeting. If not, stay home.”
