Old Bridgewater Historical Society Lecture Announced

Posted

West Bridgewater, MA --- The public is invited to a lecture on Sunday, February 12th at 1 p.m. at the OBHS Memorial Building located at 162 Howard Street, West Bridgewater. The subject of the lecture is: The Skim Milk Bridge & Comfort Willis’ Bridge and will be presented by Joan Pierce and Nick Anderson. Both bridges are located in the town of West Bridgewater.

Ms. Pierce has been the Mass. Fish & Game Land Acquisition Agent in the Southeastern District for almost 25 years. She first became aware of Skim Milk Bridge around 2014, through a video produced by Kitty Doherty and a group of AmeriCorps volunteers who were clearing portions of the Bay Circuit Trail leading to the bridge. In June of 2018, Mass DFG acquired property along the town river which gave them ownership of 75% of the bridge. Since then, Ms. Pierce has been working to put the bridge and two culverts on the National Register.

Mr. Anderson has been blazing the trails through West Bridgewater’s conservation land, Reynolds Landing, to the original site of Comfort Willis’ bridge following what is believed to be a portion of the old road. Nick has been an active member of the West Bridgewater Open Space and Recreation Committee for many years.

A follow-up event is planned for Sunday, October 1st: That will be a Trail Walk to both bridges.

Admission is $5 at the door.

The Old Bridgewater Historical Society, a private organization, started in 1894, is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and publication of history relating to the original Bridgewater area, which includes the towns of Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, and the city of Brockton.
