Old Bridgewater Historical Society Lecture

On Sunday, April 14th, Vincent Luti will be at the Old Bridgewater Historical Society to lecture about “18th Century Gravestones and Their Carvers in the Bridgewaters”. The program begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Memorial Building, located at 162 Howard Street, West Bridgewater.

The Bridgewaters are a crossroad of 18th century gravestone carvers’ work. To the east, Plymouth County carvers and to the west, Bristol County carvers who took over from Newport carvers. During Professor Luti’s presentation, the audience will learn about the Bridgewater gravestone carver, Barney Leonard, and John & James New, Cephas Thompson, Nathan Hayward, and others whose work is found in the cemeteries of the Bridgewaters.

Vincent Luti is a Professor Emeritus at UMass Dartmouth, and author of the works “Mallet & Chisel”, “In Death Remember’d” and numerous published articles on the 18th century gravestone carvers of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Over the years, he has photographed more than 7000 gravestones in six northeastern states.

“18th Century Gravestones and Their Carvers in the Bridgewaters: A Treasury of Early American Folk Art in Stone”, is sponsored by the Old Bridgewater Historical Society, whose mission is to promote education and research relating to the original township of Bridgewater, its inhabitants, and its history by collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting materials, artifacts, and information pertaining to “Old Bridgewater”.
