Mary “Marianthi” Dostou Kanelos

Mary “Marianthi” Dostou Kanelos, 97, decided to join the love of her life and cherished husband in heaven on June 20, 2017. She was the loving wife of long time school committeeman and restaurant owner James T. Kanelos.Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late James and Evridike (Pappas) Dostoglou. She was the mother of Stephanie A. Vinhateiro (Manny), Denise T. Zavota (Frank) and Valerie E. Gagnon (Ronald). She was the sister of Louis Dostou and the late Steven Dostou. She was the grandmother of four and the great-grandmother of two. Mary will most be remembered for her grand sense of humor and her beautiful smile. One would always hear Mary giggling and would manage to get others to do the same with her infectious laugh. She was an employee of the Providence Gas Company working as a bookkeeper before retiring to become a devoted mother and homemaker. She will forever be remembered for her love of “ I Love Lucy” reruns and her 25 cent winnings at BINGO games. She achieved a great milestone in her life having achieved perfect attendance for 12 years of her schooling. She loved to travel. She managed to survive a serious health issue with doctors telling her she had three months to live. Well, she managed to live another sixty-two years, so miracles really do happen. Her health issue prevented her from having any short-term memory, yet she could tell you stories of events that happened eighty and even ninety years ago. She was very proud of the fact that she was a leap year baby born on February 29, 1920. Mary may not have called attention to herself in any way, but she was a remarkable woman, dedicated to her husband and her family. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff at Waterview Villa, especially the fourth floor “angels” for their amazing kindness and compassion shown to our mom. She will remain in our hearts always and we are happy that she will be with her partner in life now and forever. Her funeral will be held on Saturday at 8:30 AM from the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a service at 10:00 AM in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 175 Oaklawn Avenue, Cranston. Burial will be in North Burial Ground, Providence. Calling hours Friday 5-7.
