Waterville, ME - John G. Shamgochian of East Providence, R.I., enrolled at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, this fall. Before classes began Sept. 6, Shamgochian took part in a weeklong orientation that included a civic engagement component in downtown Waterville, an introduction to academic and intellectual life at Colby, and an address by the Dr. Frank and Theodora Miselis Professor of Chemistry D. Whitney King at Colby's 200th convocation. A graduate of Providence Country Day School, Shamgochian is the son of Alexander Shamgochian and Alison Goodchild of East Providence, R.I.
The Class of 2021 was selected from the largest and most academically qualified pool of applications in Colby's 205-year history. This class will be the first to benefit from DavisConnects, Colby's innovative program that supports all students in their pursuit of independent and collaborative research, global experiences, and internships to prepare them for postgraduate success.
Founded in 1813, Colby is one of America's most selective colleges. Serving only undergraduates, Colby's rigorous academic program is rooted in deep exploration of ideas and close interaction with world-class faculty scholars. Students may choose among 58 majors, including new or expanded programs in computational biology and genomics, environmental studies, and climate science. More than 100 courses at Colby, from across the disciplines, integrate the Colby Museum of Art's resources into the academic experience, a priority now enhanced by the creation of the Lunder Institute for American Art. Colby is home to a community of 2,000 dedicated and diverse students from around the globe. Its Maine location provides unique access to world-class research institutions and civic engagement experiences.
