GFWC Greater Taunton Woman’s Club Press Release from March Meeting

Posted

Because March is Women’s History Month, the GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Club) Greater Taunton Woman’s Club invited Lynne Stader, former president of GFWC Massachusetts to speak to the members about the history of Women in the United States Military. Who knew that women had participated in some form during every major war in United States but were not given a permanent position in the military until June of 1948 and were not allowed in all forms of combat until 2016. Lynne’s presentation highlighted many of the important women in U.S. military history including Deborah Sampson who disguised herself to fight in the American Revolution and Dr. Mary Walker who in the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor for her work as a surgeon and prisoner of war during the U.S. Civil War. To thank Lynne for her informative presentation, club members presented her with a $100 check for Project New Hope – Food & Baby Pantry for Service Members, Veterans & Families in Worcester.

Other highlights of the meeting include the installation of new member Elizabeth Monkowsky of Berkley by Joyce Clark, membership chairman and the leadership award for the month went to Nancy Martin.
