North Kingstown, RI- The North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce is hosting the official lighting of the Tree in Historic Wickford Village to kick off the Festival of Lights celebration this weekend. The tree lighting begins at 6 pm with a performance by the North Kingstown Community Youth Chorus and The Lafayette Band. This is a wonderful event that draws hundreds of people to the village to shop and dine local both tonight and throughout the holiday season as the merchants have decorated their windows transforming the village into a magical Winter Wonderland. The winner of the Wickford Merchant decorating contest will be announced tonight.

As Senator Sheldon Whitehouse stated during the SBA Press Conference last week in North Kingstown, “Each of us can do our part to boost the local economy by shopping at small neighborhood businesses this holiday season. Buying gifts at small businesses promotes the unique products made and sold in Rhode Island while supporting real jobs and keeping more dollars in our communities.” Senator Reed, Lt. Governor Dan McKee, and Congressman Langevin also attended the conference and shopped during their walking tour. As Congressman Langevin stated, “I encourage everyone to join me in making an investment in Rhode Island by shopping and dining small this holiday season.”

“We are delighted to host this event for the 32nd year as the merchants have provided an outstanding line up of activities throughout the weekend for their Festival of Lights celebration. These festivities attract not only residents of the town and the state, but also nationwide”, said Kristin Urbach, Executive Director of the North Kingstown Chamber. “I received a call this summer from a man who said that he was bringing his entire family to Wickford from Florida for the festivities in Wickford after he researched the best New England towns that celebrates the holiday season,” said Urbach.

Following the Festival of Lights weekend, the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual Breakfast with Santa at the North Kingstown High School on December 9 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. with storytelling and cookie decorating.
