EP Police Arrest Suspects During City Patrols

Alert Observation by Officer Spots Amazon Thief. Weapon, Drugs Also Found. Earlier Arrest Nets Guns, Drugs.

The increase in internet shopping has given rise to an alarming number of packages being stolen from resident's homes. During a routine patrol of city neighborhoods on Wednesday, 3/28/18, Patrolman Scott McGregor spotted a suspicious male walking south toward the Rumford Motor Inn on Newport Avenue. The man was carrying a large Amazon package. When Ptlm. McGregor began reversing direction, the male immediately started running toward the motel.

According to an East Providence Police press statement, "with Ptlm. McGregor in foot pursuit, the male ran into the motel and entered a room. Access was gained into the room and it was determined the male fled out the room window. Two other occupants were found in the room. A subsequent investigation revealed a stolen .32 handgun and 10 grams of cocaine and crack cocaine in the room.

Officers continued surveillance in the area for the male who had originally fled. Approximately an hour and half later, the suspect emerged from an area dumpster and was located by Det. Kevin Feeney, as he again attempted to flee the area. The suspect, Miguel Manning, of no permanent address, was taken into custody.

It was determined the package had just been stolen from a neighborhood home. Manning was charged with:

  1. Possession of a Stolen Firearm
  2. Felon in Possession of a Firearm
  3. Possession of Sch. I-V
  4. 3 counts Receiving Stolen Goods
  5. 3 counts Larceny Under $1500

Room occupant John Santos of Providence was also taken into custody due to a Superior Court Warrant

ANOTHER ARREST AFTER POLICE OBSERVATION:

During the early morning hours of March 21st, EP police officer Michael O'Connell conducted a motor vehicle stop on Veteran's Memorial Parkway. The unregistered, 2010 Ford F150 was operated by Edward Jair Ortega of Providence. A subsequent search of the the vehicle revealed a .45 pistol in the center console. Additionally, two Oxycodone pills were located inside the vehicle. Mr. Ortega is being charged with:

  1. License of Permit Required for Carrying Pistol
  2. Possession of Firearm by Alien 
  3. Possession of Oxycodone
  4. Obstructing an Officer in Execution of Duty 
  5. Driving Without a License 
  6. Operating an Unregistered Vehicle
