EP Local Advisory Committee for Special Education - Shines Again!

Posted

The East Providence Local Advisory Committee for Special Education, EPLAC, held its' 2016 Special Needs Recognition Program Reception at the E.R. Martin Middle School on May 5th. The guest speaker for the evening was David Sienko from the R.I. Department of Education, Office of Student, Community & Academic Supports.

The popular annual recognition program is designed to identify those individuals or programs that are providing consistently outstanding services for Special Education students, especially in the area of inclusion. Through their hard work and dedication, students are provided with opportunities that promote self-determination, interdependence and meaningful learning. "It is our honor to share their story with others and celebrate their commitment to the students of the East Providence School Department," said event organizers. We hope you will join us in celebrating their outstanding commitment to the special needs students of East Providence!

Orlo Avenue School Principal Yanaiza Gallant talked about an Orlo award recipient: "A very awesome young man was highlighted as EPLAC's Success Story of the year! Mr. Quandell Stuart has shown us all so very much! He has made Orlo a better place by his presence! Inclusion is not something we "do" it's someone we "believe".. We are so proud!" said the Orlo Principal.

EPHS student Nick Faella nominated high school Head Baseball coach Bob Rodericks and assistant coach Chris Kennedy for coaches/teachers who support educational inclusion.

Earlier this school year, Nick suited up and scored a touchdown for the Townie football team. Thanks to the EPHS football coaches, Coach Jay Monteiro and his supporting cast and Barrington Coach Sandy Gorham for getting Nick into the game, giving him an opportunity he will never forget - to score the 1st touchdown of the game! "What a great group of teammates encouraging and supporting him on both sides!"
