EP Local Advisory Committee For Special Education Hosts Free Workshop
Supporting Social and Emotional Skill Development
This free workshop which is hosted by the East Providence Parent Advisory Committee for Special Education will be presented by Sue Constable, M.A., Autism Coordinator, RI Department of Education and RI College.
This workshop will cover the components and the importance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). SEL teaches the skills everyone needs to effectively control themselves, handle relationships and manage school and/or work demands. These skills include recognizing and managing emotions, developing caring and concern for others, establishing positive relationships, making responsible decisions, and handling challenging situations constructively and ethically. They are the skills that allow children and youth to calm themselves when anxious, frustrated or angry, make friends, resolve conflicts respectfully, and make ethical and safe choices.
SEL promotes young people’s academic success, health, and well-being at the same time that it prevents a variety of problems such as alcohol and drug use, violence, truancy, and bullying. Effective, practical supports and strategies to teach SEL will be also covered in this workshop.
Workshop will be held:
