East Providence - EPHS Boys basketball defeated Tiverton High 55-51 in a Sweet 16 Tournament action at North Kingstown High on Thursday night, March 9th. The contest saw the Townies take an early lead but Tiverton made a game of it. Tiverton was seeded higher than EP but the Townies played well to gain the victory. Tiverton finished their year undefeated but the Townies perseverance and Dion Hazzard and Deyshawn Tengbeh led EP to an inspiring win.

After EP raced out to a decent lead, Tiverton eventually tied and took the lead in the game. Clinton Ogunronbi jammed open a floor shattering dunk and the well balance Townie attack regained the lead for good. With less than a minute to play, East Providence showed mature ball control and then Dion Hazard nailed a three-point shot giving EP a 54-51 lead. Hazard was soon fouled and hit his free throw putting the game away for EP.

"Tiverton is very physical and tough. They were undefeated on the season and won their Division championship," Townie Head Coach Joe Andrade told The Reporter. "Give credit to Tiverton, they are talented," Andrade added. Dion Hazard had 19 points for EP, Deyshawn Tengbeh finished with 17 and Kyerstan Casey added 11 key points. Clinton Ogunronbi scored 6 points and David Ogunronbi had a basket.

"We played well," said Andrade. "A few mistakes late and couple of bad shots but to have Tiverton come back and then take the lead and we respond to tie them eventually take the lead back is huge," said the pleased EP coach. "Dion making the 3 as a sophomore was huge. I think it was the most physical we played all year and we knew Tiverton would play physical and we matched it."

The Townies next hurdle is huge. East Providence will face Division I Champion, Hendricken High School in quarterfinal action on Sunday at 12 noon at Brown University. In their early season match, Hendricken turned back East Providence by some 30 points. "We know what they (Hendricken) can do," said Andrade. "We will have to be ready to play."

The Townies lineup features Justin Harris, Juston Williams, Dion Hazard, Deyshawn Tengbeh, Freddie Ruffin, David Ogunronbi, Dante Macahdo, Kyerstan Casey, Justin Pena, Connor Gordon, Andre Gordon, Ben Sears, Clinton Ogunronbi and Quinton Osbourne.
