Ed Daft, Interim Supt. of Schools Leaving EP

Posted

Interim Superintendent of schools Edward Daft will become an assistant principal of Barrington High School, leaving his long tenure in East Providence schools.

Daft was also former principal of East Providence High School and a coach and middle school administrator in EP.

Daft was appointed by the Barrington School Committee last night.

The Reporter spoke with Daft and he issued a statement today; "This was a difficult decision to make. However, after careful consideration and thoughtful discussion with my family, I have accepted a position in another district.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working in the East Providence School Department for the past twenty-two years and I am grateful for the School Committee's confidence in my abilities and for the opportunity to have served the students and families of East Providence as Interim Superintendent," said Daft.

Daft stepped into a difficult position in East Providence as he dealt with a state budget commission and a series of inherited problems. Sources have told the Reporter that Daft was respected by staff for his quiet professionalism but had been considering leaving the district for some time. Daft became interim Superintendent of Schools after the School Committee fired former Superintendent Dr. Mario Cirrillo. The committee also eliminated the position of Chief Operating Officer, held by Lonnie Barham, Cirillo's right hand man. Both Cirillo and Barham are suing the school department and city.
