Mayoral Race:

The September 13, 2022 Rhode Island primary saw the city’s first elected Mayor take the top spot in a four-way race with just over 50% of the vote cast.  Incumbent Mayor Bob DaSilva received 3,896 votes while his closest challenger, John Rossi, received 2,067 votes or 27%.   Maureen L. Gomes Lopez had 917 votes while Ruarri Miller finished with 790.  The DaSilva first place finish was significant considering that four candidates were splitting the total vote.  DaSilva and Rossi will face each other in the November 8th general election in a two-person runoff.

The form of government in East Providence was changed from an appointed City Manager to an elected Mayor, like other large cities in Rhode Island.  Voters made the change in a landslide decision at the ballot box in 2016.  DaSilva is now seeking reelection after his initial four-year term.  “We have a lot more to do,” said DaSilva after his primary finish.  “Our city has become a vibrant place to live and work. I am proud of the new business we’ve attracted and the new attention given to our waterfront district and the attention we have given to our education system” said DaSilva.

John Rossi, a retired police officer, was confident after the election.  “I would like to thank all of the voters for the strong showing of support in the primary. I appreciate your support and confidence,” John Rossi posted after the election.“ The voters got me through the playoffs and we're ready for the Super Bowl,” Rossi added.
