September Events

Sept. 9th: Open House: - In addition to the usual exhibits, Hunt House Museum wel-comes the newly formed Sowams Group to our local 17th century site. The Sowams Group is dedicated to spotlighting more than fifty 17th century Native American and co-lonial sites in the 8 communities originally known as “Sowams” (the south country). Members of the Pokanoket tribe and representatives from all the communities will have exhibits/ maps of sites open to the public.

Sept. 22nd: Smithsonian’s National Museum “Free Day” 11-3pm

Take this opportunity to vist Hunt’s Mills on a Saturday! Come enjoy the 45 acres of Hunt’s: family friendly trails, picnic area, natural falls, fish ladder, wildlife, historic gar-dens, Rumford tool room, children’s room, Lt. Peter Hunt artifacts, and immersion in one of the 17th century Sowams sites.

Sept 24th: Public Meeting 6:30 - 8pm Riverside Library 475 Bullocks Pt Ave.

When the early Rumford Company tools dating from 1860-1900 came home from IN, there was a complete set of coopering/ smithing tools for barrel making. We are pleased to present master cooper, Tom Kelleher from Old Sturbridge Village, to show us how these tools were used. Tom, a cooper for over 30 years and the Historian/Curator of OSV, will present a “hands on” talk showcasing our own Rumford Company tools, on permanent exhibit at Hunt House. Refreshments served at 6:30 - program at 7pm.

Sept. 29th: Watchemoket Square Day: “Crossing to Sowams”

The EP Chamber of Commerce and the EPHS, present the annual WSD celebration of the early history of EP and its beginnings on the waterfront at the eastern end of what is now the Washington Bridge. Presentations include updates on Green Jacket Shoal, the EP waterfront development and the newly formed Sowams Group which will spotlight the Native American fording place in the area where John Brown built his first wooden bridge. Join us for walking tours from Tockwotton to the Washington Bridge, exhibits in the Cafe and chowder/ dessert from the Tockwotton kitchen.

The EPHS is a volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation of local history.
