The Dighton-Rehoboth/Seekonk Falcons improved to 9-3 on the season with a 4-1 win over the Apponequet Lakers on Saturday. A pair of second period goals from Curtis LeTourneau got the Falcons out to a 2-0 lead, and they never looked back.

“It was really nice. We all kind of had good chemistry together. It was a really nice game,” said LeTourneau, who finished things off with an assist on Jon Duncan’s third period goal. LeTourneau had a quality shot opportunity on the play, but made the unselfish move to set up his teammate and forego a bid for the hat-trick. “I kind of was [looking for it], but I missed it,” said LeTourneau on the play that resulted in Duncan’s goal.

Nolan McGovern assisted on both of LeTourneau’s goals in the game. Brandon Botelho also assisted on one of the LeTourneau tallies, and Casey Escobar rounded out the Falcon scoring when Nick Soares set him up in the third period.

Jason MacWilliam scored for Apponequet in the third period, the only puck that got behind Jake Robitaille all evening. The sophomore goalie has been equal to Senior Jake Roy in performance and in number of starts.

“As of right now? No I don’t have a number one goalie,” said DR/Seekonk head coach Ryan Cordeiro after the win. The coach explained that unlike most coaches having difficulty choosing one goalie, he finds himself in a good position. “They’re both playing great. They’ve really embraced the roles,” he said of his goaltending tandem.

The coach did say that Roy would start the first game if the state playoffs started tomorrow, but said Roy’s edge over Robitaille is slight and that the two will continue to play for the job throughout the remainder of the regular season.

In Saturday’s game, the Falcons had the better of the play all evening. Tyler Moynihan turned in an above average performance in the Apponequet net, and the Falcons missed an open net in the first period and rung a post in the second.

With two goalies playing well and a stable of skaters consistently getting the better of the chances, there were very few problems for the Falcons to correct on Saturday. The one glaring problem was Apponequet’s massive edge in the faceoff circle. “It’s something we need to get better at. It’s tough, because you only have so much time in practice, but it’s something we need to get better at,” said Cordeiro of his team’s difficulty on the dot.

The Falcons next take on the Durfee Hilltoppers on Monday evening at Driscoll Arena (both teams’ home ice). In their previous meeting, DR/Seekonk took a 3-1 win from the Hilltoppers, and the game was never as close as the score would indicate. If the Falcons handle Durfee again on Monday, they will lock up a bid in the state tournament, and the earliest such clinch in the history of the program.
