Information about the can drive: During the week of November 13-16th at the Dighton Rehoboth Regional High School, students collected an unprecedented number of canned goods and non-perishable items for the local food pantries and surpassed the school’s previous records. Students participated in the annual spirit week can drive where the freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior classes compete to bring in the most cans and be awarded the most spirit points. Under the direction of Student Body President Owen Arden, Vice President Matt McNaughton, Treasurer Julia Iwaniec, and Treasurer Jillian Hughes, student government officers sparked a social media frenzy and a heated competition between classes. Students came together to encourage their classmates to bring in a variety of canned goods and items requested by the pantries that are in high demand. Owen Arden and Matt McNaughton along with Dr. John Gould, principal, increased the stakes and challenged the students that if they could reach 10,000 canned goods as a schoolwide total the three of them would shave their heads at the pep rally. Student government raffled off the chance to give these gentlemen a haircut and although Dr. Gould's hair remained safe both Arden and McNaughton were not so lucky. The student body responded and clearly showed their DR pride and hoped to outdo each other to bring in the most cans. Even the preschoolers got in on the can drive and brought in donations! By Friday morning, trucks rolled up to the entrances of the school stacked with more cans and the foyers were filled to be nearly impassable. Seniors led the school and brought in the most items, followed closely by the juniors. In all, the student body brought in a combined total of 9,011 canned goods to be split between the two local communities. Student government members and other students volunteered their Saturday morning to sort and deliver the mountains of cans to both the Rehoboth and Dighton food pantries. Students also made Thanksgiving baskets to deliver to individual families throughout the community. Student government will also be distributing funds that were collected during the Spirit Week penny drive which totaled nearly $500. Overall, despite seniors officially winning spirit week competitions, the school community truly came together to show a great sense of community spirit and a sense of giving!

Information about Falcon 5k: On Sunday, November 4 Dighton Rehoboth Regional High School Student Government sponsored the annual Falcon 5k Remembrance Walk/Run in remembrance of students that have passed away while attending DR. In a special way this year, students honored the memory of Michael Pacheco. Students gathered on Sunday morning and had a moment of silence prior to the run/walk as Matt McNaughton read the names of all those who had passed. In addition, student speakers Owen Arden and Sam Skinner alongside Melissa Pacheco spoke at the event and remembered Mikey's spirit and the impact that he had on the community. Many community organizations helped to make the day a success including: Arbella Insurance, Bay Coast Bank, Lafrance Hospitality, Personal Best, Purple Cow, Designs to Signs, Alice's Last Sotp, Roberts & Rawnsley Insurance, Classical 95.9 WCRI, Island International Industries, RJD Property Management, and Remax Integrity. The funds that were raised from the memorial run/walk will be used to sponsor a scholarship for graduating seniors and will be awarded at the Celebration of Excellence in May. Thanks to everyone that helped to make the day a success and hope to see you next year!
