No specific local concern noted, just overall precaution

The “Sweet 16” basketball game between East Providence High School and Lincoln High tonight, March 12th will be ‘live-streamed’ so that fans can watch the game. Attendance tonight has been limited to just a few people with no tickets sold at the door.

“Because tickets are limited for tonight's Townie basketball playoff game vs. Lincoln, we are offering live stream coverage. Thank you to Assistant Superintendent Sandy Forand, her husband Roger and the EP Tech Dept. for coordinating the live stream of tonight's contest,” said East Providence Athletic Director Gregg Amore this morning. The RI interscholastic boys basketball state championship tournament has been altered by concerns with the ever growing coronavirus health scare spreading across the world. The East Providence High School boys basketball "sweet-16" state tournament game against Lincoln high school is still on for 6:30 pm at EPHS Thursday, March 12th. However there will be no tickets sold at the door. Players and coaches from each team will receive a limited number of tickets for distribution. "No one else can be allowed admittance to the game," said East Providence Director of Athletics, Gregg Amore. The plan is to keep attendance at or under 300 people.

"It is unfortunate but necessary and it comes from a recommendation of the Rhode Island Health Department and the Rhode Island Interscholastic League," said Amore. Amore and other officials will not be able to allow anyone else to attend the game. League officials will be announcing plans for continuance of the rest of the RI state championship tournament.

The EP Reporter would add that this is not the result of a specific local health concern, rather just an overall precautionary action.

Initial plans had the winner of the East Providence-Lincoln game playing the winner of Mount Pleasant vs. East Greenwich. Quarterfinal Elite 8 action will be on Sunday, March 15th with several games being scheduled between the hours of 12, 2, 4 and 8 p.m. at CCRI in Warwick, RI.

The Final Four teams will play at the Ryan Center at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston on Saturday, March 21st. The final championship game will be played at URI on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 6 pm.

The EP Reporter will publish updates should any further changes in scheduling or fan attendance be planned by state officials.

The EP Reporter notes that this is not the result of any specific local health concern, rather just an overall precautionary action.
