Posted

The City of East Providence will fly the Armenian flag on Monday, April 24th in memory of the Ottoman Turkish government’s planned Genocide to eliminate the Christian Armenians during World War I. Assistant Mayor Robert Britto will participate in this 17th annual flag-raising to memorialize the 1.5 million Armenian men, woman and children who lost their lives during that period.

“I am honored to participate in this important memorial,” stated Assistant Mayor Britto, “we can never forget this horrific crime against humanity.”

The official definition of the colors, as stated in the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, is: The red is emblematic of the Armenian Highland, the Armenian people's continued struggle for survival, maintenance of the Christian faith, Armenia's independence and freedom. The blue is emblematic of the will of the people of Armenia to live beneath peaceful skies. The orange is emblematic of the creative talent and hard-working nature of the people of Armenia

The flag-raising will take place on April 24th at 12:00PM in front of the City Hall, 145 Taunton Avenue. For more information contact the City Clerk’s Office at 435-7590.
