Birds Across New England

Audubon Regional Conservation Symposium

Posted

Sunday, February 4, 2024; 8:30 am* – 4:00 pm
Salve Regina University, 36 Ochre Avenue, Newport, RI

Nearly every group of birds, from those found in shrubby habitats and grasslands to those that reside in wetlands or eat insects on the fly, are declining. As indicators of environmental health, the loss of roughly 3 billion birds since 1970 reflects changes to our habitats, water, air, and soil that deserve our attention and concern.

Join the Audubon Society of Rhode Island for the second annual Regional Conservation Symposium: Birds Across New England. Over 20 scientists will join Dr. Charles Clarkson, Audubon Senior Director of Avian Research, and present their findings on the state of our birds. Topics range from birds and renewable energy to the impacts of climate change on avian populations. Learn what is being done to save our birds, and what obstacles stand in the way of conservation success.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Carl Safina’s writing about the living world has won a MacArthur “genius” prize, Pew, and Guggenheim Fellowships; book awards from Lannan, Orion, and the National Academies; and the John Burroughs, James Beard, and George Rabb medals.

Safina is the first Endowed Professor for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University (where he formerly co-chaired the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science), and he runs the not-for-profit Safina Center. He hosted the PBS series Saving the Ocean. His writing appears in The New York Times, TIME, Audubon, and on the Web at National Geographic News and Views, Huffington Post, CNN.com, and elsewhere. He will be available to sign copies of his most recent book “Alfie & Me: What Owls Know, What Humans Believe.”
