An Evening with ‘Sandy Hook Promise’ and 'Start with Hello.'

Raymond J. Pouliot, a retired teacher and Chairperson of Learning First Alliance / Rhode Island (LFA/RI), has organized a program called “An Evening with Sandy Hook Promise and Start with Hello.” LFA/RI and Mr. Mark Barden from Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) invite the community to this free event to be held on November 1st, 2017 at East Providence High School from 6 - 8 p.m.

“We cordially invite everyone to an evening with Learning First Alliance / Rhode Island and Mr. Mark Barden from Sandy Hook Promise,” said Raymond Pouliot. “Mr. Barden lost his son, Daniel, during the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. He will speak on SHP and a program entitled "Start With Hello," said Pouliot.

“Start With Hello teaches children and teens how to be more socially inclusive and connected to each other. SWH asks students, educators, parents and other community leaders who interact with children to take steps in class, the lunchroom and/or on the bus to be inclusive and connected,” Pouliot added. “SEE someone alone - REACH OUT and help-START WITH HELLO.”

SWH is delivered in-house by SHP trainers or can be digitally downloaded. Training and digital toolkit and resource guide provide step-by-step guidance for students, teachers and community leaders to deliver events, activities and actions that instill the SWH concept and overarching message of inclusion and community.

During the 2017 - 2018 school year, LFA/RI will work with SHP Promise to bring this program to Rhode Island schools culminating with Start With Hello week of February 5 – 8, 2018. LFA, a non-profit, organized in 2007 to support and promote Rhode Island public schools. “We were formed when negative stories about public education seemed to dominate the media. LFA/RI is made up of educational organizations in Rhode Island and are an affiliate of the national Learning First Alliance (www.learningfirst.org),” said Pouliot.

Since its formation in 2007 LFA/RI has worked to promote and support Rhode Island public school students, teachers and administrators. It has done this in a variety of ways.

In 2007, LFA/RI published a report that outlined some of the successes in Rhode Island public schools. Here's The Rest of The Story, a report published by LFA/RI, focused on the increases in student performance in English language arts and mathematics at all grade levels, the percentage of schools commended for their sustained improvement and the misconception that schools labeled as making insufficient progress are not improving.

The program at East Providence High School on November 1st from 6-8 pm is open and free to the public. Further information is available at www.learningfirst.org.
