2012 Fire Safety Poster Contest Winner

Posted

Every year the students of Palmer River School take part in the SAFE program. This program is

designed by the state Fire Marshals office and funded in a large part by a grant. It's intent is to produce

a safe generation. It is taught by Lt. Randy Larrivee who is assisted by ffMike Corderio, ffNat Dyer, if

John Ferriera. ffTaylor Withers, and ffWayne Fuller. The Rehoboth Ambulance committee also helps

on special projects. A partial list of what the students learn at their grade level is; how to prevent fires..

what to do in case of a fire, techniques on when it is safe to go on ice. and what to do if ice cracks or

brakes when you're on it, forest safety and the dangers of smoking. Most of the time is spent in

preschool through grade four, but some time is spent in Beckwith. The program is evaluated through;

school staff critique, student tests, demonstrations, homework and a poster contest. For a homework

assignment the students playa game called "Smoke Detective" where they are the detective and find

and correct as many hazards or potential hazards as they can in their and relatives homes. This year the

students who found the most were treated to a picnic lunch in the field followed by a fire muster and

given Tee Shirts.

A few years ago the poster contest started going down hill. Part of the reason for this was

because to win a prize you had to compete against about 130 students. As this was the only school wide

evaluation tool, something had to be done to bring it back to life. The remedy came in three parts. First,

and probably the largest infusion was that the Art Teacher Ms. Pappas agreed to distribute the materials

and give pointers on the importance of posters, and how to produce one. Second instead oftaJking

about prizes we brought a Bike into the cafeteria and got a few popular teachers to ride it. Third we

added more prizes so students competed by room as well as grade giving more chances to win. The

result was two fold, more posters and better posters. The bike was donated by WALMART, and the

REHOBOTH AMBULANCE donated a helmet.

This years winner of the the contest and the bike was third grade Megan Reilly. As you can

.imagine this was no small feal Megan had to best about 450 eager contestants. The other winner was

the SAFE' program, we received proof that the students are retaining what is being taught and we ARE

truly producing a SAFE generation .
