Steven J. Gomes, 69, of Seekonk, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at Miriam Hospital.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Anthony K. and Barbara M. Gomes. Steven was one of the first African American firefighters in East Providence. He also was a substitute teacher for the East Providence School Department and a Longshoreman for the Local 1329, International Longshoreman Association. He was a member of the Cape Verdean Progressive Center and also hosted at his home a annual picnic for his family and friends. Steven will always be remembered as a fun loving easy going man with a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.

He leaves one daughter, Akeisha Corrie of Mississippi, one sister, Linda L. Tavares and her husband Joseph of East Providence, one brother, Richard A. Gomes and his companion Angela Fonseca of Pawtucket, four nieces, including his beloved niece, Stacey Gomes-Olmo, his Goddaughter, Taren Shorter, Darice Collazo and Ava Gomes, three nephews, Joseph Tavares, Scott Tavares and Anthony McCabe, three grandchildren, Korey, Uniqueka and Destenee Causey and one great granddaughter, Kali Johnson. He was the brother of the late Anthony “Boy” Gomes and Wendy M. Gomes.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at 8:45 AM from the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Francis Xavier Church, North Carpenter Street. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours Tuesday 4-8.
