SeekonKindness Marks a Milestone

Posted

The early days of Covid-19 were dark and frightening times. Yet across Seekonk, neighbors were reaching out to neighbors, strangers helped strangers, people uplifted one another. Simple acts of kindness broke through the overwhelming feelings of loss and uncertainty.

The Friends of the Seekonk Public Library (Friends) and Seekonk Library Trust (Trust) were inspired by this spirit. Just as the library strengthens community, these acts of kindness reflected the values of shared, positive experiences. And like the library which provides a community gathering place, they decided to aggregate the “many flowers blooming” and promote the wonderful ways Seekonk residents were helping each other.

As a result, they created the SeekonKindness Facebook page. This page pulls together the diverse stories of kindness happening across the town. It creates a single place to go to see and share the news about Seekonk kindness, promoting other community online places, while assembling acts of kindness on one page.

It is hard to believe, but that was now over a year ago. SeekonKindness marks its one-year anniversary this month.  In that time, videos captured the amazing excitement for kids when the police and fire departments had birthday celebration drivebys. Posts highlighted group acts of kindness, for example, when Seekonk High School students and staff members started off the new year with a donation to the town’s homebound seniors, providing them with puzzles, games, crossword puzzles to help them keep busy during the lockdown.  Individual acts of kindness have been celebrated, like the woman who filled her car with supplies for a needy family. And sometimes, just a beautiful photo of a Seekonk setting brought tranquility in these troubling times.

The Friends and the Trust thank all who shared and continue to share their stories on SeekonKindness, engage with their comments and “likes”, and help spread the word about acts of kindness in Seekonk. Kindness strengthens community, and community enriches our lives.
