Ode to a Seekonk Squirrel

Posted

We own some land near 44 and share it with the Squirrels
Turkeys, Goundhogs, Fox, and Deer, and most obey my rules.

Stay away from the house, the garage and my sheds
the gardens and berries, or you might end up dead.

Yet one small red squirrel said “I'll do as I please”.
“Your shed will be better, than a house in the trees.”
Built a nest, gathered nuts of the Black Walnut kind.
Filled my shed with those nuts, one fine day, did I find.

Chewed up gloves, knocked down jars,
straw and string everywhere.
It seemed, for my rules, that darn squirrel didn't care.

So I threw out the nest and took all the nuts,
filled in the hole, sprinkled poisonous dust.
And I may seem a Grinch at this Holiday time.
But three bags of nuts are now legally MINE...
