Posted

By the time you receive this edition of the Reporter, the class of 2015 will have graduated, attended annual banquets, and received scholarships/awards at Class Night. We wish them all the best as they go on to college, enter the military, or join the workforce. Thank you to their class advisors, Mr. Moran and Mr. Hoogerzeil, for all of their dedicated work on behalf of these students.

The last day of school is June 25th.

This year, three of SHS’s finest educators will be retiring: Mrs. Wilbert, Art; Mr. Isidoro, Portuguese, and Mrs. Lord, Mathematics. We wish them health and happiness and thank them for their years of service to Seekonk students.

Thank you to the members of PAC for organizing another successful Post Prom Party. This year the event was held on May 16th at Sky Zone in East Providence. More than 90 students attended.

The annual All Star Banquet was held on Wednesday, April 29th, at Independence Harbor. The top five students in each of the South Coast Conference high schools were recognized for their academic success. Congratulations to Jen Nickson, Matt Salit, Andrew Feighery, Neil Joyce, and Patrick Gregorek for their many accomplishments.

On May 19th, Mrs. Borden’s Environmental Science class and Mr. Wills’ Marine Biology classes participated in a field trip at New England Aquarium. Students learned about various aquatic ecosystems and the plight of endangered species in our oceans.

Congratulations to the newly inducted members of our National, Spanish, and French Honor Societies. The ceremony was beautiful thanks to the advisors, Ms. Marinucci, Mrs. Geremia, and Mrs. Pelicano.

School-wide Summer Read
Seekonk High School is pleased to announce that for summer 2015, we will have a “One School, One Book” reading program where all SHS students will read the book The New Kids: The New Kids: Big Dreams and Brave Journeys at a High School for Immigrant Teens by Brooke Hauser (2012, 336 pg). A non-fiction work by a Massachusetts author, reviews for the book include:

  • A People Magazine "Great Read"
  • "The stories of these kids are simply astonishing." -- Talk of the Nation, NPR
  • "A refreshing reminder of the hurdles newcomers to this country still face and how many defy the odds to overcome them." --The New York Times
  • "Brooke Hauser, who spent a year following members of the senior class, delivers a rich, extraordinarily moving account of the challenges they met--and the many ways in which kids are the same the world over." --Parade Magazine

Art News
Congratulations to Ariya Sonethavy and Rachel Crafford who have been accepted into the Mass Art All-State sponsored by UMass Dartmouth that is being held on June 12 and June 13, 2015.

Art All-State brings together some of the most talented juniors from across the state for an intensive two-day art experience. The students, competitively selected, collaborate with artist/mentors to create group installations. Through gallery and studio experiences AAS challenges and inspires these participants to think creatively about themselves and the role that art can play in life after high school. Eight studio groups are each lead by two professional artists, who help facilitate the students in the creative process. The artists, who come from a variety of different art disciplines, also act as mentors for the student participants. The Art department is very proud of Ariya and Rachel and is excited for the girls to have this wonderful experience.
