October Programs and Events for Children and Families
(September 7, 2015) – Join a family pumpkin party, get up-close with owls, or discover how animals survive the winter! Audubon provides plenty of family-friendly fun in October. Just grab your fleece jacket and head outside!

October 1 & 2, 2015 Animal Tales
Audubon Environmental Education Center

October 3, 2015 Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day

Admission to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Environmental Education Center will be free on the first Saturday of every month, courtesy of a grant from the Citizens Bank Foundation. Families can explore environmental exhibits representing Rhode Island’s diverse habitats, from upland meadow and cornfields to wetlands, salt marshes and the Narragansett Bay shoreline.
Situated on the beautiful 28-acre McIntosh Wildlife Refuge, visitors can enjoy nature trails.

Come find a treasure at the Audubon Used Nature Book Sale. Find something special for
the nature enthusiast on your holiday shopping list or maybe a treat for yourself!

  • 10:00 am to 2:00 pm: Nature Craft Table 
  • 10:00 am to 3:00 pm: Used Nature Book Sale.
  • 10:00 am and 1:00 pm: Nature Story
  • 11:00 am to 12:00 pm: Book Making with Recycled Materials - Learn how to create your own book! Kids will use a variety of recycled materials and art supplies to create their own unique hand-bound book. Write a story, keep a nature journal, or sketch your own illustrations!
  • 1:30 pm: Animal Interview
  • 2:30 pm: Guided Nature Walk

This popular program introduces children ages 18 months to 2 years to the delights of nature through age-appropriate, hands-on activities. Along with a nature lesson, activities may include nature walks, crafts, songs and stories. This is also a wonderful opportunity to make new friends with the other children and parents. Registration is required as space is limited and fills very quickly. Adults must accompany children and there are no refunds for missed classes. In order to maintain an age-appropriate program we ask that older siblings not accompany the parent/child team. October 8 & 9, 2015 Junior Naturalists for Home-schooled Families

Join other home-schooled kids to learn about nature and science! This hour-long program will introduce participants to a different topic each class, with hands-on experiments and nature-based activities that are sure to foster a love of the natural world. Classes are limited to 15 children, so please register early. Adult must attend with child.

Thursday classes are held from 2:00-3:00 pm; Friday Classes are held from 1:00 – 2:00 pm.

October 14, 2015 A Walk in the Woods:
A Glimpse at New England Forests
Prudence Island 9:45 am – 3:00 pm
Explore the beautiful forested trails of Prudence Island, from deciduous hardwood to pine barren and freshwater swamp. Education staff will guide you through the woods, sharing their knowledge of local tree species, New England forests and how land use change over hundreds of years has shaped the current landscape of Prudence Island. Walks are at a leisurely pace and will cover two to three miles. Registration is required.

Come to Prudence Island and search for animal sounds, homes, tracks, and signs during this outdoor investigation! Practice using your senses to discover the many animal species that call the island their home. Learn about predator-prey interactions, animal adaptations in response to the environment and humans, invasive species, and more.

Bring a snack and relax while an Audubon naturalist reads a nature story. Then create a unique work of art from different recyclable materials and found objects. Will it be a bouquet of flowers made from plastic bottles? A bird’s nest made from scrap paper and yarn? Join us and find out! No registration required. October 31, 2015 The Perfect Pumpkin Party
Audubon Environmental Education Center

Come to Audubon for our annual day of pumpkin fun! Try your hand at pumpkin golf, pumpkin ring-toss, and pumpkin art. Join us for a different kind of fall celebration and find out just how much fun a pumpkin can be. Buy a pumpkin from our "patch" and decorate it with fun art supplies. Children in costume will receive a special prize! No need to register. Please note: some of the art activities may be messy, so wear clothes that can get dirty.
