Seekonk Has a Few Additional Graves Available
The board of selectmen has given the go-ahead for the town to sell 15 unoccupied graves at the town cemetery on Newman Avenue. A group of graves was purchased in 1925 but were never used. There is a legal process involved that the town followed to locate any relatives of the original owner, who died in the 1950’s. No family members came forward to claim the graves, so they are now being put up for sale. The cost is the same as it usually is - $600 for residents and $1,000 for non-residents. The Newman Avenue cemetery only has about 20 graves left (including this group of graves) and the town is acquiring a cemetery at 93 Dexter Avenue. (See story below.)

The EPA Plans Clean-up of Mill Fire Site on Maple Ave.
The Environmental Protection Agency will be cleaning up contamination at the site of the former Attleboro Dyeing and Finishing Co. on Maple Avenue this month, according to an article in the Sun Chronicle. A mill fire in May 2012 destroyed the building, which had been vacant for many years. EPA representatives told selectmen last month that asbestos was found in the building debris as well as several metal drums containing hazardous waste. Some general building debris that does not pose any hazard will not be removed. The property is now bank-owned and the town may consider buying the land and redeveloping it at some point after the clean-up.

Moderator Rescinds Committee Appointment
Town moderator Peter Hoogerzeil appointed former Selectman Robert McLintock to fill a vacancy on the school committee, but the appointment was rescinded, according to a Sun Chronicle article. Selectwoman Michelle Hines pointed out that town bylaws require that candidates for any town board or committee must undergo a public interview. Hoogerzeil said that he would restart the process according to the bylaws.

Several Candidates Interested in School Committee Position
Several candidates are vying for a position on the school committee. The position became available after Robert Richardson resigned last month. The Board of Selectmen and remaining members of the School Committee will hold a joint meeting on September 14 to select a candidate to serve until the town election next April.

Town Will Soon Have a New Cemetery
The Board of Selectmen gave their approval for the town to purchase a cemetery located at 93 Dexter Avenue in Seekonk that is owned by Holy Cross Parish in Central Falls. According to media reports, there is space for approximately 1,400 graves at the site. The town would be responsible for maintaining the property. The town has been researching sites for a new cemetery for several months. State law requires that towns provide a cemetery for burial of its residents.
