From the Town Clerk...

Posted

Thank you to all who attended the annual town meeting on June 15th. Over 200 Seekonk registered voters attended this session, which passed the budget for the next fiscal year for the town and school departments.

A reminder to residents that if you are planning to have a yard sale, you must obtain a permit from the Town Clerk’s office prior to the date of your sale. This is a town by-law that was put into place to avoid residents holding yard sales as a business, week after week. Permits are $5.00 per day and can be obtained on line or in the Town Clerk’s office. Sign by-laws are also given out at the same time a permit is issued in this office. No off premise signs are permitted. This means you cannot put posters on telephone poles or signs with yard sale on them at the street corner. This is someone else’s property so the town cannot sanction signage off premise. Hopefully residents will respect these bylaw rules.

The prospective juror list will be sent to this office via e-mail shortly. Only the residents on this list can be called for jury duty during the year. The list will be available in this office shortly after it is issued by the Jury Commissioner’s office.

The Town Hall will be closed on Friday, July 3rd because of the July 4th holiday falling on a Saturday. Hope that everyone enjoys the summer weather. Seems as though July and August fly by.

We are taking orders here for the K-9 officer’s tee shirts. I have several shirts here that can be purchased right now and we can also order them for you and you can pick it up here. There has been some confusion about purchasing these shirts and we want to help Officer Laprade and Kilo his K-9 partner raise money for their important program. They play such an important role in the safety of our police officers so you can support this with the purchase of a $15.00 tee shirt.

I attended the Meadows annual celebration on Saturday, June 20th. It was such a nice event, starting with awarding the Sharon St. Hilaire award to Colleen OHalloran. This award is presented to a resident each year who does volunteer work in the town of Seekonk. Colleen is the one always at the bake sale table for the schools at our elections. She also helps with the clothing drive that the schools sponsor. She does many other things that make Seekonk a great place to live. Congratulations Colleen—well-deserved!

The Meadows also featured several different musical groups. I really enjoyed the banjos that played first. Steve Caddick, a Seekonk resident was one of the two banjo players. Thoroughly enjoyed their music. There were kites being flown in the meadows and several artists and vendors set up tables. Good work to the Meadows committee. Sharon St. Hilaire is smiling down on all of this activity as this was her vision along with Ken Lagerquist.

September 12th is the date for the annual Save a Pet craft fair at the Hurley Middle School. More information on how to rent space will be upcoming. Save the date and either rent space or come and support all the crafters who are there. We also have several local animal rescue groups who set up booths with information on their programs. Our parks and recreation department as well as our K-9 officer and Kilo also attend. Your support of local fundraisers helps fund town activities and programs that would not be possible without fundraising efforts. Volunteers are so important and many times their work is taken for granted.

If you have not yet licensed your dog, please do so. Renewals now require a $20.00 late fee. New dogs are not charged a late fee, but after a dog is six months old, it needs to be licensed and have a current rabies certificate.

Happy summer to all.
