(June 1, 2022) – Looking to stay cool in July? Audubon offers naturalist-led evening treks to learn about fireflies and other wildlife, and cool morning walks in search of birds. Get out, explore nature, and see what can be found!

Butterfly Walk at Caratunk

Audubon Caratunk Wildlife Refuge, Seekonk, MA
July 6, 23, 2022; 9:00 – 11:00 am
Walk the fields of Caratunk with a naturalist and learn about butterflies of New England. Track the species you see as part of a long running citizen-science program. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for walking in fields. Bring binoculars, camera, water, and bug spray.

Ice Cream and Lightning Bugs

July 8, 2022; 7:30-9:30 pm
Just as it starts to get dark, the lightning bugs appear! Come make a delicious ice cream sundae and discover what makes these insects so special. A naturalist will lead an evening hike to look for their flickering lights. If you are lucky, a resident beaver might be spotted along the way. This program is fun for the whole family. Please bring a flashlight.

Fireflies!
Audubon Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge, Smithfield, RI

Join Audubon for an evening celebrating the living lightshow that is the firefly. Learn about how they use their flickering lights to communicate and how to recognize them during the day. Make a glowing firefly craft to take home and end the evening by going out to the fields to watch for their blinking displays. Program will be rescheduled in the case of inclement weather.

Bird Banding at Fisherville
Audubon Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge, Exeter, RI
July 10, 2022; 9:15 – 11:15 am
Join Audubon and witness bird banding, where experts capture, band, measure and release songbirds in order to record their movements. Birds will be gently removed from tall “mist nets” set in the shrubby habitats on the grounds of Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge. The techniques of identifying, measuring, weighing, and banding the birds will be demonstrated before they are released. The migratory habits and life history of each captured species will be discussed. Meet in the barn across the street from the parking lot.

A Blessing of Birds: Artwork by Catharine Randall

Artist Catharine “Catrinka” Randall is a member of the Santa Fe Society of Artists. She is a self-taught, award-winning artist who loves painting birds and animals. Her art exhibit at the Audubon Nature Center & Aquarium will feature watercolor wildlife studies of North American birds. Most were painted plein air. Opening reception held July 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

Saturday Morning Bird Walks with Audubon

Register for Saturday morning bird walks on the grounds of the Audubon Nature Center in Bristol with Tom Younkin, avid birder and Founder/Creator of Kingbirder, an on-line contest for birders and bird photographers. Many species can be found in the gardens, fields, and wetlands of this beautiful wildlife refuge. Walks will follow the Nature Center trails, boardwalk and East Bay Bike Path for easy accessibility. Advance registration required. Walks are weather dependent.

Summer Mushroom Hunting in Rhode Island
Two-Session Program with the Mushroom Hunting Foundation

July 16 & 23, 2022; 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Discover the variety of mushrooms in our region! Some are poisonous, but their ecology is interesting...while others are simply delicious! On July 16 join mushroom hunting teachers Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt for a presentation on the basics of wild mushroom science and safety, with a focus on the local summer species that are considered "safe for beginners" to cook.

Return on July 23 for a guided walk and wild mushroom cooking class. Walk the Audubon property for a close-up look at local fungi in their natural habitats. Discover the fascinating science of mushroom identification, learn tips on mushroom photography, and see firsthand how collecting tools are used. Then head back to the Nature Center for a cooking demonstration and experience these special flavors for yourself.

Woodland Creature Paint Night

Life Under a Log - A Hunt for Mini-beasts

There are few purer childhood experiences than exploring the woods and fields. Bring the kids, romp through the woods, and learn about what animals make their homes under logs and rocks and bark. Dress for dirt and avoid any insect repellent or sunscreen on the hands as we will be seeking and touching small creatures.

Sunset Walk at Touisset Marsh

Take a leisurely summer walk along the trails at Touisset Marsh. Observe the twilight activities of wildlife as you watch for them in the meadows and marsh. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, and insect repellent. You may wish to bring binoculars.
