Seekonk High Receives Banner Recognition

Posted

Seekonk High School has been selected as a Special Olympics Unified Champion School by Special Olympics International and Special Olympics of Massachusetts.

The National Banner was unveiled in a December 12 school-wide assembly in the school’s gymnasium.

Representatives of the Hasbro Corporation and Special Olympics were on hand as the high school received national banner recognition for its efforts to provide inclusive sports and activities for students with and without disabilities. School Superintendent Rich Drolet explained Seekonk High School was receiving the honor as a result of meeting national standards of excellence in the areas of inclusion, advocacy, and respect. The National Banner program looks to recognize schools around North America whose staff and students go beyond the three necessary components of Unified Champion Schools (Unified Sports, Whole School Engagement, and Youth Leadership) and truly embody inclusion.

Hasbro had picked Seekonk High School along with four other schools in the country to sponsor.

“The staff, led by Kristin Nelson, and our students have demonstrated over the past five years an increased and steadfast commitment to inclusion,” Drolet said at Monday’s school committee meeting.

Drolet noted the students “embraced differences, embraced positive social change, and really looked to make our community and the world a better place.”
