Cesina “Cena” D. (Sylvester) Mayers, R.N., 85, of Seekonk, passed away peacefully at her home alongside her family on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. She was the loving and beloved wife of the late Robert “Bob” F. Mayers, Jr., who died on October 16, 2014.

Born on June 6, 1932 in Attleboro, she was the daughter of the late Antonio F. Sylvester and the late Eleanor E. (Quaglia) Sylvester.

A graduate of Attleboro High School, Class of 1952, Cena enlisted in the United States Army in 1953, and proudly and honorably served our country as a sergeant. She was stationed in Fort Lee, Va.; Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Fort Bragg, N.C.; and at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colo. She attended the Tabbott & Hubbard School on the GI Bill and learned income tax preparation. She later studied medical transcription and obtained her Nursing degree. A tireless and hardworking woman, she worked for many years as a Registered Nurse in the offices of Dr. Pastorella, at Pondville Hospital, and then for 33 years in the Maternity Department of Sturdy Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1997.

A resident of Attleboro for most of her life, Cena also lived in Raynham and Seekonk. Always an active woman, she was a member of the American Legion, where she served as a chaplain and as a member of the “Twenty and Four,” the Honor Society of Women Legionnaires. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion, and was a member of a bowling league, a tennis league, and an antiques car club.

Cena inspired all she touched with her loving and indomitable spirit, her quick wit, and her wonderful sense of humor. She embraced everyone she knew, loved to cook and entertain for family and friends alike, and enjoyed collecting lighthouses. Cena’s family was her priority, and her love and pride for them was immeasurable.

She is survived, and will be sorely missed, by her dear children: Thomas R. Mayers and his wife, Kim E. (Schoeppner) Mayers, of Seekonk; Tina Marie (Mayers) Pothier and her companion, William “Bill” H. Platt III; and Timothy R. Mayers and his wife, Sandra P. (Lynch) Mayers, of Cumberland, R.I. She was the cherished and adoring grandmother of 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and was the sister of Frank M. Sylvester of Pawtucket, the retired Lincoln, R.I. Fire Chief; Thomas R. Grossi of Dighton; and the late Lena A. Boulanger. She leaves several nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Her sweet faithful companion, “Sarge,” a schnauzer, seldom left Cena’s side and will forever miss her.

Family and friends are invited to honor and remember Cena by gathering for a visitation with Veteran’s Honors on Monday, July 10, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. — 8:00 p.m. in the “Memorial Chapel” of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. from the “Memorial Chapel” of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home – 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, 385 Central Ave., Seekonk.
