(March 7, 2018) – Go ahead and get a little muddy as you search for salamanders, explore life in a pond, head out on a swamp romp and more! Remember that Audubon has tons of hands-on nature fun during April School Vacation Week. Get those kids outside and have some fun!

How Does Your Garden Grow?
Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day

Thanks to the Citizens Bank, the Environmental Education Center is open free to the public the first Saturday of every month. Join us for crafts, nature stories, animal discoveries, hikes and more. No need to register!
April 7, 2018: How Does Your Garden Grow?
It’s time to get your hands dirty! Come celebrate soil, plants, and gardens. Stop in for garden themed crafts, games and activities for the whole family.

Audubon Earth Day Film Festival

What does nature mean to you? Audubon would like to see your answer on film! Submit YOUR nature film to Audubon’s first annual Earth Day Film Festival, held on Saturday April 21, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
Films under four categories will be accepted:
- Hatchling (age 8-11)
- Nestling (age 12-15)
- Fledgling (age 15-17)
- Full-Grown (age 18+).

Audubon Seal Watch at Rome Point
John H. Chafee Nature Preserve, Saunderstown, RI
April 15, 2018; 12:30 -3:00 pm

Harbor seals are the most common marine mammals in Rhode Island waters. They are present from fall through spring, and are most abundant in April. Join Bob Kenney, volunteer Audubon naturalist and URI marine mammal scientist, for a visit to the largest haul-out site in the state off of Rome Point. The walk is timed to low tide, and we could see a hundred seals or more. Be prepared to walk a mile each way and to watch for birds along the trek.

April School Vacation Week

April 16 – 20, 2018; 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Become a Nature Explorer! Join Audubon in a weeklong voyage to discover and test your nature skills. Take off on an expedition with an Audubon naturalist and explore our local habitats with nets, magnifying glasses, and more.
Nature crafts: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
Nature story: 10:00 am and 1:00 pm
Special Program*: 11:00am
Animal interview: 1:30 pm

*Special programs are held each day at 11:00 am and are recommended for ages 6 and up. Free with admission, no registration is required. An indoor program will be substituted in the event of rain.
Monday, April 16, 2018: Explore the Shore – Join Audubon for a hike down to the seashore to find our favorite plants and animals. Come learn about these creatures and their amazing adaptations that help them live in such a special place. Kids will bring home a seashore-inspired craft.
Tuesday, April 17, 2018: Swamp Romp - Grab a net and head to the wetlands with Audubon to look for signs of spring! Can you spot a turtle? How about a frog? What other animals can you find with your net? We will make a special swamp-inspired craft to take home.
Wednesday, April 18, 2018: Meadow Madness - The meadow is home to lots of different creatures. From insects to rodents, it’s the perfect place for a bird of prey to find its next meal! Let’s look for insects and play a game to learn about raptor hunting skills.
Thursday, April 19, 2018: Forest Foray - Learn about the different animals who call this local habitat their home. Play nature games and work together to create fairy homes in the forest.
Friday, April 20, 2018: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - Help Audubon celebrate Earth Day with eco-friendly activities! Kids will play recycle themed games and craft a special piece of art out of recycled materials.

Super Seeds and Hanging Gardens
April Vacation Week at Powder Mill Ledges, Smithfield, RI
April 17, 2018; 10:00 – 11:30 am

The smallest ones are like dust. The largest ones are heavy to lift. Some are soft as clouds. Some are as prickly as a cactus or sticky as glue. Come find out what makes seeds so amazing. We'll play with lots of different seeds, sample some fruits as we examine their seeds, and plant some of our own in a 'hanging baggie garden' to take home. (Berries and tree nuts will be used)

Big Hawk, Little Hawk

Come and meet two live raptors at Audubon - a Red-tailed Hawk and an American Kestrel - the largest and the smallest hawks that are found in Rhode Island. Learn about the lives of these amazing birds and touch preserved feathers, wings and talons.

Pond Exploration

You may know that frogs and ducks and turtles live near ponds, but have you ever looked for the small creatures that live in the mud and skate across the water surface? Come along on this search for ALL the life of a pond. Using nets and magnifiers, we will check out pond plants and animals that often elude the naked eye. Come dressed for mud and wet. This program is designed for adults and children alike.

Froggy Fun!

Kids Exploration Day on Prudence Island

It's the last day of school vacation week - what better way to spend it than by exploring the awesome nature trails and shorelines on Prudence Island? Bring the kids look for all kinds of cool critters in the forest, along the streams and on the beach. From birds to crabs to salamanders, we will search for them all!

Great Swamp Walk with Audubon
South Kingstown, RI
April 28, 2018; 2:30 – 5:00 pm

Join naturalist Bob Kenney for a springtime walk into the Great Swamp Management Area. Because of the very high diversity of habitats, Great Swamp supports of large variety of both resident and migrant birds. It has been an excellent site for finding several rarities over the years. Amphibians and reptiles are also awake after their long winter naps and will be active. The rain date will be Sunday, April 29, 2018.

Family Night Hike at Caratunk
Audubon Caratunk Wildlife Refuge, Seekonk, MA

Most people do not get out and explore or hike at night. Here is your chance to discover nature in the evening! Join naturalist Marina Flannery for a leisurely night hike on the Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk, MA. Listen for animal sounds, test your night vision and see what is happening on the refuge when the sun goes down. Wear sturdy shoes, bring a flashlight, and dress to stay warm in the cool night air.
