Townies Baseball, Softball Ousted in State Quarterfinal Action

Both teams finish with 12-8 season records

Posted

Both the East Providence High School baseball and softball teams finished successful seasons with quarterfinal losses on May 31st. Baseball loss to nemesis LaSalle and softball lost to Coventry.

In a 2:30 pm game at LaSalle, the Townies could not manage any offense off the Rams Ryan Benum who pitched a complete game 6-1 victory over 12-8 East Providence for the Division I Quarterfinal. The Townies only managed two hits against Benum. East Providence had a brief rally in the top of the 5th inning when a walk, hit batsman and infield hit loaded the bases. With two outs Josh Silveira laced a single to center field scoring EP's first run and the potential second run was thrown out in a close play at the plate. EP couldn't solve the great pitching performance by the Ram's Benum.

"They (the Townies) had a great season. They ran into a quality pitcher today," said East Providence Athletic Director Gregg Amore after the game. "Any public school with 12 wins in Division I play, has a great season," Amore would add.

Barring an upset in further playoff action, the Division I baseball state championship is looking like LaSalle vs. Hendricken.

In softball action the 12-8 Townie squad lost a close match to Coventry. The game was tied at two in the sixth inning when Coventry broke the ice with a couple of hits and went on to a 5-3 win in their Division I Quarterfinal. EP had 5 hits while Coventry managed just 4 on the day. Tanya Cooper pitched for EP and had 4 strikeouts.

It was the last game for veteran Townie coach Rob Traverse who has coached Townie softball for 20 years. He will remain a guidance counselor at East Providence High School.
