Mass Dept. of Transportation Plans to Redesign Rt. 44 & Rt. 118 Intersection
Mass DOT representatives met with selectmen to discuss the redesign of the intersection at Rt. 44 (Winthrop Street) and Rt. 118 (Bay State Road/Anawan Street). Officials said the project is needed due to the high number of accidents at the location, the lack of pedestrian and bicycle accommodations and aging infrastructure. State officials presented three alternative designs, with the preferred option being a roundabout. Other options add two left turn lanes on Rt. 44 and one also realigns the existing approaches. A decision on the redesign has not been made. Design and construction of the project would be funded by Mass DOT. According to the project timeline, construction is not expected to start until the fall of 2021. A presentation on the project can be found on the town website www.town.rehoboth.ma.us.
