BRISTOL, R.I., February 8, 2018 – Rhode Island philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein has generously expanded the number of scholarships available for Feinstein Junior Scholars to attend Roger Williams University in the Fall of 2018.

Building upon the $500,000 gift made in 2016, the Feinstein Foundation has accelerated the number of Alan Shawn Feinstein Leadership Scholarships to be awarded to local students attending RWU in the 2018-19 academic year. The Alan Shawn Feinstein Leadership Scholarship is currently supporting 17 students attending RWU, and has supported a total of 28 students since the scholarship program began in 2004. With this accelerated round of funding, the Foundation has doubled the number of scholarships available to incoming freshmen in the Fall of 2018.

The gift helps support RWU’s mission of developing graduates who are committed to giving back to the community by supporting Feinstein Junior Scholars – students that pledge to do good deeds while in elementary and middle school – to continue making a meaningful impact on local and global communities while receiving a college education.

“It is my highest priority to make these scholarships available to more of our Junior Scholars, especially youngsters who want to become teachers,” Feinstein said. “We want to inspire these students to pursue a college degree, and we are here to put it within their financial reach.”

This gift builds upon RWU’s commitment to provide every student the opportunity to combine their academic scholarship with community-engaged work, through projects that put students’ knowledge and skills to the test solving real-world problems with community partners.

“We are grateful to Alan Shawn Feinstein and the Feinstein Foundation for creating greater access to a Roger Williams degree, particularly for students who share our commitment to community service,” RWU President Donald J. Farish said.

Students who wish to attend RWU for the 2018-19 academic year may apply now for an Alan Shawn Feinstein Leadership Scholarship. The deadline for application is February 15.

While it is open to all majors, students intending to major in Education are strongly encouraged to apply.

“It is particularly gratifying when our Feinstein Scholars are able to return to their communities with the mission of teaching and otherwise reaching out to help others, which is at the heart of the Foundation’s mission. Teachers often have the biggest impact on instilling a love for giving back to their communities in the youngsters they educate,” Feinstein said.
