Registration Is Now Open For Girls Rock! RI’s Ladies Rock Camp

Three-day camp empowers women, trans, and nonbinary participants to learn an instrument, write a song, and perform live with a band in front of family and friends.

Providence, RI (February 1, 2019) - Girls Rock! Rhode Island is pleased to announce that registration for Ladies Rock Camp 2019 is now open! Beginning on International Women’s Day, this three-day intensive camp experience will take place on March 8 through 10 at Jamstage in Pawtucket, RI.

But, the name “Ladies Rock Camp” can be misleading. “It is important to note that Girls Rock! RI programming is not just for ‘girls,’ and we play more than ‘rock’ music” explains Hilary Jones, Executive Director and Founder of Girls Rock! RI. Girls Rock! RI welcomes women, trans, and nonbinary participants to learn to play an instrument (drums, vocals, bass, guitar, or keyboard), form a band, write an original song, and perform it live in front of friends and family. Participants are encouraged to “Think of ‘rock’ as a verb, not a noun. You could ‘rock’ country, hip-hop, or Latin music!” said Jones.

In addition to music activities, campers also have the opportunity to participate in workshops like Sexism in the Workplace, Finding Time for Art and Music in a Busy Life, Songwriting, and Screen-Printing. Plus, at meal time every day, there are live performances from local bands representing female, trans, and nonbinary musicians with built in Q&A time. All this in only three days.

“Our goal is to provide people who have faced gender-based oppression a safe, non-judgemental place to express themselves and get loud, regardless of their ability to play or pay” Jones explains. Need-based scholarships are available on a first-come first-served basis. In fact, two-thirds of Girls Rock! RI participants receive scholarships to attend. Proceeds from the adult camp also help provide scholarships for its youth counterpart, Girls Rock Camps, which run every summer.

People who take part in this program come from all walks of life and include students, professionals, and stay-at-home moms, among many others. Participants attend for a whole range of reasons, including the opportunity to learn a new skill, meeting like-minded friends, setting a powerful example for their children, and proving to themselves and others that it’s never too late to rock. Anyone interested in participating in Ladies Rock Camp can register or learn more at www.GirlsRockRI.org.
