Localscapes in Gallery 175

From July 14 through September 6, 2019, Gallery 175 will be showing artwork by three talented landscape artists in its gallery in downtown Pawtucket, RI. The artwork of Marjorie Ball, Grace Bentley-Scheck, and Kathy Weber depicts familiar coastal, urban, and rural scenes of Rhode Island.

Marjorie Ball has painted and drawn all of her life. After studying at the Art Students League, NYC, Pratt Institute of Art, NYC, and Syracuse University she worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, and as an art teacher. Ball’s preferred mediums are oil and charcoal and she paints on location out-of-doors as well as in her studios in East Greenwich and Pawtucket. Her painting process is a journey where she reworks her canvases by wiping and scaping to reveal layers underneath while at the same time applying fresh paint as she strives to capture a mood or to enhance the luminosity of the scene. Although representational, Ball’s landscape paintings are soft, sometimes dreamlike, often with abstracted color.

Grace Bentley-Scheck, who maintains a studio in Narragansett, received her art training at Alfred University in New York and has been a full-time printmaker since 1972. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Ireland and Australia and has been included in many private and public collections. Her award-winning prints depict urban scenes, particularly views of buildings that show the passage of time. By means of a printmaking process that she has perfected, she is able to capture the textures of glass, weathered brick, decomposing stucco, traces of renovations, and gleaming steel structures.

An artist, illustrator, and teacher, Kathy Weber attended Boston College and UMass Dartmouth. She has won a number of awards for her work in oil, pastel, and gouache and has had her artwork published in American Artist Magazine and by a number of greeting card companies including American Greetings, Gibson, Paramount, and Marion Heath. Inspired by fleeting moments of light or movement, Weber prefers painting from life. Although she will often begin a painting out-of-doors and finish it in her studio, the freshness of the scene is retained through vibrant color and skillful brushwork.

The public is invited to enjoy the artwork at Gallery 175, located at 175 Main Street in downtown Pawtucket in the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center. The gallery is open daily; the hours are 10 am to 4 pm. A reception for the artists will be held on July 14 from 2 to 3:30 pm.
