East Providence Police Make Arrest - Vehicle Flees Almost Striking Officer

Police Continue Vigilance in City on Suspicious Activities

The East Providence Police issued a statement involving a drug arrest today in the vicinity of the Wampanoag Plaza on Pawtucket Avenue:

"Sgt. Diogo Mello was patrolling the Wampanoag Plaza, 1925 Pawtucket Ave, in an unmarked police vehicle when he observed two vehicles involved in suspicious activity. Upon approaching the vehicles and identifying himself as a police officer, one of the vehicles fled, almost striking Sgt. Mello. The second vehicle attempted to flee, but was unable to. While officers were investigating, a civilian contacted police and advised they had recorded the incident. The video revealed the passenger threw a clear plastic bag, which contained suspected narcotics, out of the vehicle while Sgt. Mello was distracted. This was located and seized by officers. The bag was later determined to contain approximately 156 grams of suspected cocaine and fentanyl. Also seized was approximately $1800.00 and a small amount of marijuana. The vehicle that fled and the operator were later located by East Providence Police officers. Santonio D. Young, 37 years old, of 3rd Ave. Woonsocket, was charged with the following:"

1. POSSESSION W/ INTENT TO DELIVER 1OZ-1KG OF COCAINE

2. POSSESSION WITH INTENT TO DELIVER FENTANYL
