East Bay Food Pantry in Bristol Receives Award from Food Bank

Providence – At its Annual Meeting, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank awarded its 2018 Loni McGrath Community Garden Award to the East Bay Food Pantry in Bristol. On hand to receive the award was Executive Director Nicki Ann Tyska.

In presenting the award, Food Bank director of agency services Erica Hanson: “Over the past year, the East Bay Food Pantry stepped up to ensure that we could continue delivering healthy, fresh produce to their guests.”

The award is given to agencies that offer community garden programs to offer fresh produce to their clients. Last year, the East Bay Food Pantry agreed to operate the community farm it under their agency. This was a tremendous effort, which included director Nicki Tyska making daily trips to the farm. The Food Bank thanks East Bay Food Pantry and Nicki for their hard work and dedication.

About the Loni McGrath Community Garden Award
This annual award was created in memory of the RI Community Food Bank’s very good friend and colleague, Loni McGrath. One of the projects that Loni was most passionate about was working with agencies and community garden programs. Each year one agency is selected to receive the award for their work in this area.

About the Rhode Island Community Food Bank

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank distributes food to 53,000 struggling Rhode Islanders each month through a statewide network of 158 member agencies including food pantries, meal sites, shelters, youth programs and senior centers. The Food Bank solicits food donations from the public and from the food industry, including supermarkets, food manufacturers and growers. To keep up with the high demand for food assistance, the Food Bank also acquires food at low cost from wholesalers. This year, the Food Bank distributed 10.5 million pounds of food. The Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.
